Why Blinds Go Better With Cats
While we all love our furry little friends, they can create havoc in our homes with our furniture, carpets and especially curtains. After moving into my own place I spent a lot of money on buying the perfect curtains and was devastated to discover a great big tear the size of a soccer ball in one of them- it was very hard to miss. I then frantically ran to check all of my other curtains around the house and was surprised to see the small tears made by those tiny kitten claws.
Luckily I have blinds in our bedroom and living room, but all of the other rooms were carefully designed with breezy, flowing curtains. Now while it seemed like a good idea at first I started to get extremely irritated when I saw a stain on one of my white curtains, or a tear because my cats loved using my curtains as trees.
Obviously I have been online numerous times looking for ways to make my cats stop ripping apart my furniture and especially my curtains; here are some of the tips I found:
- Cut your cats nails
- Buy a scratching post and put it in the middle of the living room
- Spray your furniture and curtains with pepper or lemon
- Cover your furniture with sheets- although this is not an option for the curtains
Get rid of your pets
Now I am sad to say that none of those tips worked. Instead my cats are now still clawing up the curtains after scratching their scratch post. And while I sprayed the curtains and furniture with lemon, they simply walked alongside me and sniffed the material after I sprayed it. And as for cutting their nails: how are they supposed to defend themselves against the neighbourhood alley cats when they have no nails? So after all of my research and failings, I finally discovered the one and only thing which can make a cat stop ruining your curtains: Blinds!
Why Blinds Are Cat Friendly
- Blinds are durable, and depending on your taste you can opt for wooden, aluminium, plastic or material blinds. Cats find it very hard to climb on these as there’s not really any grip and therefore it’s no fun.
- Blinds are easier to clean. When you find that your furry little friends have left furry little mud marks all over your blinds, you simply have to get a wash cloth and gently rub the marks off: quick and easy.
As for the furniture problem; I still have no idea how to keep my furniture in one piece. But at least now I have beautiful roller blinds which I can simply roll up whenever my cats want to climb in and out of the windows, and when they do leave a mark I simply wipe it off. No more scratches, smells and tears. And the best of all: blinds actually look better! Truly blinds are the way to go!
