Window Blinds – Tasteful & Fashionable
As almost everybody knows, window blinds are a type of window treatment that offer an alternative to the traditional curtains. A window blind is usually formed by narrow horizontal slats of wood, vinyl or metal, which are connected together by cords which allow the entire assembly to be rotated simultaneously, controlling the amount of light that enters a room.
Although horizontal blinds were probably the first commercial version of this type of window covering, which has been known since the late 1700’s, today vertical blinds are equally, if not more, popular than their horizontal counterpart.
From Wooden Window Blinds To Fabric Blinds
Originally, all window blinds were constructed from thin wooden slats. The traditional venetian blinds, (first found in Venice, before the idea was taken over by the British), were made of this material, and it has remained popular, especially for outdoor blinds, ever since.
With the advent of modern technologies though, many wooden blinds were replaced with vinyl slats, which were lighter and required less maintenance. Metal blinds, especially of aluminium, have become popular, while vertical blinds tend to be manufactured from fabric.
Vertical blinds operate on the same principle as horizontal ones, but where horizontal blinds rotate around a horizontal axis to open an close, vertical blinds, which hang from a ceiling track, rotate through 90 degrees on a vertical axis. This type of window blind has become increasingly popular, and has the advantage of being able to be opened and closed just like curtains, as well as being rotated.
Horizontal blinds on the other hand, can be raised and lowered by one cord, or rotated by another, or by means of a blind stick which operates the mechanism by which the are turned.
Types Of Window Blinds
As well as the horizontal and vertical blinds already mentioned above, blinds for windows come in a variety of types, each of which relates to some feature of the windows blinds.
Particularly popular ones include the venetian blinds and vertical blinds, as well as outdoor blinds, which are still often constructed of wood, or alternatively, bamboo, for a lighter blind. Outdoor blinds are often of the type referred to as roller blinds. Roller blinds in general do not include a rotational mechanism allowing the individual slats to be controlled. Instead, they are raised (or rolled) up by means of a cord attached to the entire blind. Their construction is usually such that even closed, light can pass between the slats, and they are usually used to supply shade in an outdoor area.
Roman blinds are another type of blind that, although being in fashion, is not strictly speaking a window blind in the sense of being rotated to control sunlight entering a room. Rather, this style of blind, often constructed from fabric panels, is made in such a way that opening them causes the panels to fold up against each other.
As well as these popular types of blinds, and variations on the common window blinds, such as mini blinds or micro blinds (which use smaller than standard slats), a good blinds company will be able to make custom window blinds as well, to match your specific requirements. An example of these may be blinds for arched windows for example.
