There is a wide range of shutter, both interior and exterior and an even wider range of types of shutters. You can easily choose your type which suits your taste and lifestyle.

Here Are A Few Types Of Exterior Window Shutters:

Shaped

Wooden shutters usually come in this type of style. They are available in all wooden exterior designs. Shape exterior shutters either have louvers with curves or wooden insert panel high on the arch.

Wooden Shutters

Wooden shutters come in either finished with oil or paint or unfinished. They have extended and wide side stiles, non-see through louvers and middle rails.

Plastic Vinyl

Shutters also come in plastic material and there are many styles and designs. Plastic vinyl types of shutters are very durable and long lasting. These types of shutters are made from polypropylene UPVC that has built in UV prohibitor. This helps make the shutters be less costly to maintain. Plastic vinyl shutters are used for decorative rather than protective purposes.

Cedar

Most exterior shutters are made from cedar. This is because cedar is highly resistant to outside elements. It has material which is naturally oily and is also used for cladding and roofing. Cedar window shutters come in a solid panelled or louvered design and these are for operational or decorative purposes.

Flat Panel Shutters

These are the basic type of window shutters with a solid panelled shaker design. They have tennon and mortised joints which are reinforced with dowels.

Classic Louvre

These have a smooth finish and usually come with 67mm louvers cut flush behind the panel.

UPVC Shutters

UPVC shutters are the traditional type of shutters. They have louvered panels with panels that are batten and board style. Most people love this style because it’s long lasting and very affordable.

Decorative

All types of window shutters can be used for decorative purposes. These can be either put inside or outside the windows. Those that are used outside are usually installed with locks or screwed onto the wall using a bolt that is plastic threaded and tapped right onto the wall.

Standard Louvre

The standard louver window shutters are made with tennon and mortise joints dowelled through the front. This gives the shutters more strength and a longer lasting ability. It has a small v groove which surrounds the joints to make them look more appealing and stylish.

Venster Panel

Window shutters with this type of panel are usually 16mm thick with rails and stiles that are also thick. They are the thickest type of shutters and though to also be strong and long-lasting. It has a groove and tongued finish behind the shutters with surrounding panels at the front.

Hardware For Window Shutters

There is a wide range of hinges, locks, holdbacks and handles available which are used as hardware. The hinges are usually L-shaped or strapped. The strap hinges are usually very popular. Locks are used on panels and are installed on the inside of the window so that they are locked on the inside. The holdbacks are used to hold shutters used outside the window against the wall so that they provide effective protection. Handles are extras that can be used to close the shutter panels. They are also commonly used for decorative purposes.
