Cleaning Window Shutters

Revised: August 23, 2011

Window shutters can be used for decorative or protective purposes. The exterior shutters are usually used to protect windows especially during storms. Shutters have a lot more useful purposes. That’s why they need to be properly maintained and cleaned. Cleaning them is quite easy and can be cleaned using the same method despite their types.

Here Is How To Easily And Effectively Clean Your Shutters:

You will need water, a cloth, bleach, bucket, detergent, sponge, garden hose, garden sprayer and scrubbing brush. First wipe away all the dirt and debris on the shutter with a wet cloth. Fill a bucket with four parts water and one part bleach, and then fill the garden sprayer with the solution. Spray down over the entire window shutter with the bleach solution using the garden sprayer. This will help remove the dirt and mould on the shutters as well as disinfect them.

Make another combination in the bucket. Fill it with warm water and detergent. Use this solution to scrub the shutters with a rough textured sponge. The dirt will easily get removed after being softened by the bleach solution. Use the sponge to clean the large areas of the window shutters and then use a small brush or toothbrush to get into the crevices. After cleaning, rinse the shutters with a garden hose and then allow them to dry.

It’s also important to clean your window shutters properly before painting them. Painting your shutters will instantly make them look like new. This is one way to freshen the look of your shutters without having to buy new ones. Cleaning the shutters first will ensure that the paint adheres to the surface of the shutters and make the paint last longer.

Here Is How To Paint Shutters:

Remove the shutters from the windows and place them in an area that has shade. Try not to paint them during a day that is too hot as this will prevent them from drying quickly. Give the shutters a quick scrub before painting them to remove any dust or debris on them. This way the paint will adhere easily on the shutters.

You will need to clean them with water mixed with detergent and a scrubbing brush. Be sure to rinse them after cleaning them with this solution because not rinsing them will make it hard to paint them. Allow them to dry completely and this takes a few days. Another way to make the paint adhere to the shutters is by using primer. Applying a layer of primer on the shutters will really help in making the painting process easier and quicker. You can paint the shutters after the primer has dried. The paint will then easily adhere to the shutters giving great results.
